Füzér‘s history dates back to the Middle Ages, and is almost inseparable from the village like a crown adorning the unique Füzér castle, which was a royal and aristocratic castle estate during its history. Among the stone castles of Abaúj County the Füzér castle was built earliest, before 1235, even before the Mongol invasion. The first castle owner was “blind Andronicus” descended from the “Kompolt” clan which no longer occurs in medieval sources. It is anticipated that this name refers to one branch of the Aba family . King Andás II bought the castle from Andronicus in 1270. The Füzér-Őrhegy (Guard Hill) fortress belonged to the castle, which was still in use in the Árpád age and in the first decades of the 14th century. The castle was a royal estate until the end of the Árpád dynasty. The later owners included names like Báthory, Nádasdy, and Perényi. During the time it was owned by Péter Perényi, who was also the guardian of the crown, the royal crown was hidden in the Castle in 1526. In 1671, after the fall of the Nádasdy conspiracy, it become a treasury estate. The Court Chamber ordered the castle destruction in 1676. Due this, the historic role of the Füzér castle expired. The castle estate came into the possession of the Károlyi family in 1686. Füzér served as the center of the estate in the Middle Ages. Then and later there was a close co-existence with the nature, (logging, farming and related crafts like blacksmiths, coopers, and saddlers.)
